    Alice holds up a weird object in one hand to show Sally. It is not big but is unidentifiable and has a base. You can draw what-ever weird thing that does not look like any object one has ever seen.

I kind of like the idea the means for time travel was right under Alice’s nose if she only understood the technology – the same way I have a smart phone and can only text with it…
