MCAD Comic Art Update from Mandie Brasington & Jaime Willems

line

The Minneapolis College of Art and Design’s yearly Mini-con is coming up March 14th and 15th!

That’s right, Mini-con is now being spread over Friday and Saturday, free and open to all as always!

From noon to 3:30 pm Friday we will be running the traditional Mini-con featuring current MCAD students, ending with a showing that night of Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist.

Exhibitors on Saturday will be students and MCAD Alumni.

The con, for the first time, will also contain a whole day (10 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday) of exciting panels to attend – as well as an exhibition of student comic art!

The evening will culminate with a showing of Will Eisner Profession: Cartoonist
(the elusive Brazilian documentary).

For more info and a list of events, check out their Facebook page.

And last but not least, a quick video from MCAD’s 2012 mini-con.

Hope to see you there!

MCAD’s Women in Comics

International Women’s Day is coming up this Saturday, March 8th.

In celebration of this Comics Kingdom has a post where they asked cartoonists to talk a little about about some of the female comic characters and/or female cartoonists who inspired them, current or classic.

Here’s a list of the artists who responded:

Isabella Bannerman, Six Chix
Bill Griffith, Zippy the Pinhead
Ron Ferdinand, Dennis the Menace
Sandra Bell-Lundy, Between Friends
Margaret Shulock, Apartment 3-G and Six Chix
Mort Walker, Beetle Bailey
Jim Borgman, Zits
Stephanie Piro, Six Chix
Terri Libenson, The Pajama Diaries
Jim Keefe, Sally Forth and Flash Gordon

Posting my response here as well…

The female cartoonists who are inspiring me right now are the next generation of cartoonists coming out of the Comic Arts program at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The head of the department is Professor Barb Schulz.

    • When I went to the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art back in the 1980s the industry was for the most part white and male, and the student body reflected that. Go into a Comic Art class at MCAD today and you’re starting to see the women outnumber the men, and with this a sea change. In the 1960s you had the underground movement of artists like Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton giving the medium a welcome shot in the arm. In the 1980s it was the graphic novels of Art Spiegelman and Alan Moore. The next breath of fresh air I see is the influx of more and more female cartoonists building on the work done by the greats like Dale Messick, Ramona Fradon, Marie Severin, Jill Thompson, Colleen Doran (etcetera all).

The Comics Journal just did a piece on the Minneapolis Comic scene spotlighting some of these MCAD students. I invite you to check it out.
